What's it about:
Love Actually meets Sex And The City in this romcom about five women chasing, seeking, dreaming and even stalking love and commitment from their prospective boys. Based on the self-help book of the same title, the film serves as a dummies' guide to those who don't read the signs, or those who misread them only to end up in disastrous relationships. What's hot:
Even though the setting is Baltimore what happens in the lives of these women is universal. You like someone on the first date, and keep wondering why he hasn't called you back? Or you wonder if the only real commitment is actual wedlock? Then there's always the 'will I ever find true love?' phase where every friend who's in a relationship becomes your enemy. As an ensemble the cast works perfectly, with every actor getting under the skin of their character. Aniston's Beth is probably the closest she's come to playing herself, while Johansson makes the most of her God-given assets her pouts and curves! However, it's Ginnifer Goodwin who steals the show as the persistent Gigi who keeps wondering why no one calls her back! Don't miss the monologues that begin at the start of each new chapter.
What's not:
Despite being light and fluffy, the plot gets serious and preachy in the second half. There are moments when the film leaves you high and dry. The stories needed to milk out situations and premises where the characters could do so much more. Barrymore's character doesn't have enough to do though there's ample scope. Fans of Sex and the City will draw parallels between the two, though the former goes all out to prove its point.
What to do:
An attempt to look at the serious side of relationships in a humorous way, the film wins you over with its simplicity.
