Jalebi Bai speaks out

Singer Ritu Pathak has literally tasted success after four years with the Jalebi Bai song rocking the charts. In fact, the past year or so has been good for this Bhopal-born singer who's delivered hits like Razia Gundon Mein Phaas Gayee and Papa Jag Jayega. She talks to CS about her newfound success:

Sweet success
I have been working with Anandji (composer Anand Raj Anand) for four years now. I knew that he was planning a song like Jalebi Bai for Double Dhamaal and was listening to different singers to find the right fit. So it feels great that my voice worked for the song, and it became a huge success. Actually, what got my attention was the title of the song. Earlier, I's sung a Bhojpuri song that had the word Halwa in it; it was a hit. So I'm glad Jalebis done even better. Also, it's just a happy coincidence that both my songs Razia Gundon Mein Phaas Gayee and Jalebi Bai are picturised on Mallika Sherawat. An item song on Mallika automatically makes news.u00a0u00a0

Pay off time
Though I used to sing as a kid and can sing in Oriya, Bhojpuri, Bengali and Rajasthani fluently, I never had aspirations to become a singer. But people back home told me to try my luck in Mumbai, so I took part in a reality show. I got eliminated in the piano round. This was four years back. Since then, I was constantly trying to get in touch with composers. I used to call Shankarji (Mahadevan) regularly, but he was busy. Finally, he called me to his studio for a trial to sing Papa Jag Jayega from Housefull. He liked my rendition and things have got better since then. If Kishore Kumar had to struggle for more than a decade, I'm prepared for more.
