Given that cricketers have over-packed schedules these days, incorporating fitness in their lifestyle is no easy job. So John Gloster, the former physiotherapist of the Indian cricket team and the current trainer for the Rajasthan Royals, has a big task at hand. But the man believes in smart time management and fitness that produces maximum results. And, he swears by Altitude Training and Pilates. He talks to CS +ve about his idea of fitness:

The right fit
The Rajasthan Royals as a team have greatly benefited from this form of fitness, especially Shane (Watson) who was down with major injuries a couple of years ago. He's one of the best all-rounders in the world now. Altitude Training has helped the team become more flexible, develop a better balance, get rid of those extra kilos and more. And the best part is that a 20-30 minute workout can produce results that would probably be achieved in an hour of heavy-duty gymming. I've never been a big fan of weights because I feel they only help you build muscles. But you need to do a lot more if you want to increase your overall fitness levels.u00a0

Shaping up
It is heartening to see Indians becoming increasingly health conscious. There is greater body awareness and a desire to stay in shape. However, it is important to opt for a fitness programme that is suited to you and your body type. I think gyms don't necessarily offer you the best solutions. In fact, more often than not, the trainers aren't adequately trained and are shoving down incorrect gyaan down your throats. It's best to adopt a form of fitness that is reliable and sustainable. Having said that, watching your diet is also important.

Mind games
But more than anything, you need to focus on your mental health. Yoga can play an important role in soothing frayed nerves. Breathing exercises also help you calm down and make you more aware of yourself. Staying happy and spending time with a book or watching a film is my way of unwinding.
