Technology doesn't hurt. Not when it allows you to express yourself with just a punctuation mark, or behave like a shrink with no one to contest your diagnosis. One of India's promising young designers Kallol Datta, made his Twitter debut in March this year, and admits to having used it to "vent frustration, curb cigarette
consumption, receive orders from clients and voice his anger against plagiarism." The Kolkata boy who believes design offers him an escape from all things conventional, says a medium like Twitter, Facebook and Orkut act as a collective viral advertisement for his embryonic brand. "I might not receive huge orders from stores, but several singular orders have come to me on Twitter," says the 26 year-old who'd rather use the technology to further business than discuss his little heartbreaks.

Makes business sense

Veteran Delhi designer Suneet Varma shares Kallol's view about "hourly personal diaries" posted on Twitter being "ridiculous". The designer grabbed headlines recently for his collaboration with Judith Leiber, renowned designer of haute couture handbags. It's curiosity that got Suneet to create a Twitter account, three days ago. "NRIs from Dubai, Singapore and Hong Kong have added me on because they wanted to place orders. So, yes, networking tools help you reach out," he tells you.

Muft, muft, muft!

And it helps when it's all for free. R&PM:Edelman, PR consultants to high profile fashion and lifestyle brands like Vertu, Forevermark, designers Ravi Bajaj and Arjun Khanna, plan to post 140 character summarisations of press releases issued on behalf of their clients and upcoming events managed/organised by the firm.

Fashion Week updates in real time

With most fashion and lifestyle magazines hitting the stands every month, if not every four, some like Verve have hopped on to build an online community of followers other than subscribers. "We began it in March as an experiment, since we wanted to be an immediate voice during an event like say, Fashion Week. Readers have to wait for the next day's newspapers, while TV channels play the obvious in loop. We Twittered in real time to tell our readers, without mincing words, what really unfolded at this year's Fashion Weeks," says Verve Editorial Director Parmesh Shahani.

New breakthroughs in "cyberspace microblogging in real time" have made luxury brands like Louis Vuitton and Christian Dior shed their snooty-quotient and welcome a "mass" medium. Perhaps, it's also just the stylish incentive Harper's Bazaar needed to launch their official Twitter page, which gives cheek-with-chic commentary on all things fab! "Meanwhile, designer Varun Bahl has promised not to do velvet-appliqued roses this season. We wait eagerly," read their Twitter feed, creating curiosity around a designer's forthcoming collection. "It's about embracing the hottest, newest, latest Twitter is great," says Sujata Assomull, editor Harper's Bazaar.

Manav dresses Zayed, LV jazzes it up

Delhi designer Manav Gangwani's undivided love for Bollywood has finally paid off. After creating red carpet garments for an annual Bollywood award function for the last seven years, this is the first time he gets a chance to host his own fashion show at the event scheduled in Hong Kong on June 12.

Manav, who will also be designing garments to compliment jewellery designer Farah Ali Khan's collection of trinkets, says his line "tells a story woven in romantic elegance. It's about marrying modernity with femininity, combining rich gold with vibrant emerald."

He's all set to dress stars Lara Dutta, Dia Mirza, Suzanne Khan, Raveena Tandon and Raima Sen. Actor Zayed Khan and his wife will wear his creations for a red carpet appearance, while Louis Vuitton will jazz up their ensemble with accessories.
