In a free-wheeling interview, singer Hariharan talks to CS about his thoughts on the latest trends in music and how ghazals will never die:

Musically speaking

Music today
There is no particular trend being followed in terms of the genre of songs. It’s all about what kind of films are being made. Even today, if there’s a film on Ghalib or any classical musician, then the songs in it will be classical. But if you are making a Rockstar, the songs will belong to the rock genre.
Plus, now there’s no poetry. There’s more of free verse and expressions. Either there are item numbers or songs with hook lines. Also, music now has a window period. The duration for which a song will work has come down to one or one-and-a-half months, not more than that. Earlier, it was one or two years. So, now they make the maximum noise till they can make it work.

The immortal ghazal
As for the loyal ghazal lovers, they are definitely not dying out. Wherever I have a ghazal concert, atleast 2 to 3,000 people attend it. A man listens to fast-paced music when he is young. But when you are 50, you need to settle down and listen to something soulful. That’s when ghazals come in. Ghazal is a talk with your beloved, who can be your child, spouse or religion. However, the number of ghazal singers has gone down, mainly because there’s no economical viability.u00a0
