What's it about: First things firstu00a0-- Dominic Sena directed Nicolas Cage in the uber slick Gone in Sixty Seconds. It's unbelievable that he has made the transition from hot wheels to a 14th century monastery of witches and knights. Cage plays a knight who has to undertake a perilous journey and transport a girl suspected to be a witch (Claire Foy) to her trial. Along the way, he and his band of men face evils of all kinds from within and outside.
What's hot: Sena succeeds in creating the atmosphere of 14th century Europe. His knights and their armour feel real. Using a legend to weave a credible story around the plot works in the film's favour. Cinematography stands out, especially the battle scenes and grey landscapes. Action is engaging. Foy is an absolute delight though her characterisation is weak.u00a0
What's not: Unfortunately, the characters are too intense for the story. By focussing on the characters more than on developing the story, he loses track of what he's set out to do. Cage starts to look haggard and weary after a point. He doesn't seem convinced in what he's doing. Even though he looks the part, transforming himself to that period of time is a daunting task. There are times when it feels like he might just pick out his smartphone from the amulet and start yapping.
What to do: It has a solid premise but doesn't do much to engage you.
