It was way back in 1999, that singer Shaan gave acting a chance with Daman.
But since then, it’s been a roller coaster ride of songs and more songs. It’s only now that Shaan is making a proper entry into Bollywood with a comic caper. And he’s even gone shirtless for it! “It wasn’t a big deal,” says Shaan, “Although I did call the wife and inform her. She said to go right ahead!” He speaks to CS about his singing career and acting alongside co-star Mika:

Just an experience
I acted in Daman way back in 1999. Meanwhile, I kept getting offers but I was never really keen on acting. I was kept busy with my recordings and anchoring projects. Television was also hectic and it was impossible to find time for anything else. Off late though, I had been toying with the idea of acting. There were no television commitments either.
Then this offer came and it was a comedy film, a genre which has become very popular these days. Also, I’m taking it as an experience. You never know, this might be the first and last film I do.
All that mush
People have got an image of me that I sing only mushy, romantic numbers. And people aren’t making those kind of songs anymore. Magar teen romantic gaanon mein se ek toh mujhe mil hi jaata hai. But there was a time when 90 per cent songs were romantic.
Today, even if it’s romantic, then they put a Sufi song in it. That’s the trend now. Not that I can’t pull off that stuff but that image is there. So irrespective of that, I’m not looking at becoming an actor. It’s the experience that I’m enjoying.
On a lighter note
Anything is possible now, so I just might click with the audience. Who knows, the Khans could have an early retirement; move away Khans here comes Shaan! (laughs) I’m just kidding. I’ve never really planned anything, not even my singing.
Mika and I At the shoot, I got to meet stalwarts like Anupam Kher and Asraniji. It was so much fun hanging around with them. It’s unlike my recordings where I just go and record the song and after some chit-chat, I’m out of the studio. All my co-stars are such big names in comedy. Mika and I kept saying we’re the worst here! (laughs) So we kept trying to give each other confidence. I had thought I will at least be better than Mika in the acting department. Pata chala ye mujhse bhi achchi acting kar raha hai!u00a0
