Sharman Joshi is the man

Here's an idiot who is on a roll. Ever since his appearance as Raju Rastogi struck a chord in 3 Idiots, Sharman Joshi's been super busy. What with adoring audiences and a list of endorsements and now a solo hero film. About to start shooting for Ferrari Ki Sawari, Sharman opens up to CS about his much-dreamt-about success and adulation:u00a0

Performance driven
Till date, I haven't visited an astrologer or numerologist to improve my career. I always live in the present. Of course, I get pangs of nervousness before a film's release like every other actor. But I have never had a career plan. Ferrari Ki Sawari is my first solo hero film. Whether the film will work or not is subjective.

No one can guarantee a hit. Every actor finds his audience based on the kind of characters he portrays. While many people refer to me as a subtle actor, I don't consider myself to be one. I feel that people make such statements only after seeing your last couple of films.

I started off with an art film like Godmother and followed it with Style, which was a slapstick film. You saw me doing all kinds of nonsense in that film. I love paisa vasool slapstick comedy films that have a level of polish and finish. My brand of humour varies from subtle to situational to dialogue oriented to slapstick.

Character code
I quite enjoy the boy-next-door-image as everyone can relate to it. It's a tag that's been associated with every actor, including my favourites Shah Rukh and Kajol. You can also experiment with a variety of characters with that image. If girls find me cute, all that I can say is that it shows that they have great taste in men, yaar. They have the upbringing and values to appreciate a man like me. I mean, I am in full form and I feel so proud about it (laughs out loud).

Being an idiot
I can be very critical about my performances. My sister Manasi (Joshi Roy) gushes over all my performances whether they're good, mediocre or bad. For her, it's her little brother on screen. The same logic applies to my mother. My dad is quite balanced in his remarks as is Prerana, my wife. In fact, my wife is least bothered about my work. It's a great thing as it gives me the kind of space needed for a Bollywood actor.

But I was overwhelmed by the praise I got for Raju Rastogi in 3 Idiots. I remember I was at this lounge bar in Dubai where I met a group of South Korean bankers who recognised me from the film. The manner in which these 30-40-year-olds gushed over me was embarrassing and touching at the same time. u00a0It's always great to be appreciated for your work.
