Shekhar Kapur's short film, New York, I Love You, is dedicated to late Academy Award winner Anthony Minghella.

It is based on Minghella's short story called the Upper Eastside. He was to direct it but he passed away before the film could be completed. As Minghella became ill in the midst of the project, he chose his own replacement director.

The director of Elizabeth was hesitant to do this film initially, but due to Minghella's illness and because of an interest in directing short films, he agreed.

Kapur confirms, "When I read the script, I asked Anthony, what does it essentially mean? I immediately realised the power of that question. For I had to discover the meaning of the film while I made the movie. And when he so tragically died, these statements took on an even greater meaning for me. I imagined Anthony smiling at me and laughing at my perplexity on how to shoot this film."

Once it was made Shekhar showed the film to Carolyn, Anthony's wife, she said, 'This is a perfect end to Anthony's body of work."

Minghella who?
Anthony Minghella was an English film director, playwright and screenwriter. He won an Oscar for The English Patient (1996). His films include The Talented Mr Ripley (1999) and Cold Mountain (2003).
