Shoes and handkerchiefs speak about your inner self," says Delhi-based Swati Mehrotra, owner of Swati Modo that specialises in custom-made shoes for men, women, children and even pets. Mehrotra, who has a degree from Footwear Design and Development Institute in Noida was drawn to the profession because of "fussy feet" and the fact that she found it difficult to find shoes when she was a child.

Mehrotra will be in the city next week to showcase her collection of shoes that stand tall amongst the works of 25 other upcoming designers from other parts of the country under the theme -- Cocktail, that caters to a yuppie audience that works hard and parties harder. "I don't follow trends, my customers are the trendsetters. When people walk into my store they ask for a shoe that reflects their personality and I try to do my best to meet their demand," says the 25 year-old.

The designer takes a little help from celestial beings as well, with her zodiac collection shoes that's priced at Rs 35,000 a pair. A fortune teller will read your kundli and elements that match your sign will be incorporated in to the shoe.u00a0

Customer's requests have included a bride, who wanted to gain some inches in her lehenga, a Romeo, who wanted to narrate his love story on a pair of heels for his girlfriend and a man who's feet were two different sizes and just wanted comfortable shoes made especially for him. "I have my own manufacturing unit so I'm in tune with every stage of production. Products are handmade and most of them are one of a kind," explains Mehrotra, who makes all kinds of shoes except sneakers.

Mehrotra's latest invention also includes shoe straps (left) made of leather and fabric that can be worn along with casual sandals, chappals and heels to jazz up the look for a night out.

After setting up her store in New Delhi three years ago, she is now looking to set up stores in Mumbai, Chennai and Chandigarh by February, 2012.u00a0

At: AARNA, 25 designers will be showcasing their collections on December 9 and 10 at the BMB Art Gallery.
