Tisca ka nuska

She has a problem with our ilk. Tisca Chopra seems to think that the media has branded her as the boring housewife, thanks to the some of the roles that she's played. But this girl's got a lot more to her. After our first meeting with her, we do concede that she's quite right. The actor is funny, spunky and grounded. Gearing up to essay the role of a single, independent and strong professor in her upcoming film, Tisca talks to CS about relationships and marriage:

Who: Tisca Chopra
What: Talks about relationships and marriage
Where: At her Oshiwara residence

Knot easy
Having been married for more than 10 years doesn't make me a relationship guru. But I find it strange that we as a country get a peculiar sense of accomplishment when we tie the knot. I think the achievement is in sustaining a marriage and not walking down the aisle. There are many people who are unhappy in their marriages and many women who suffer because they married the wrong people, for the wrong reasons. I can't believe that they're willing to put up with so much crap just for that one chutki sindoor!

Status update
I don't think that my married status has worked against me. If someone has not cast me in a film because I'm married, I've not heard about it. In fact, I think that I've done my best work after marriage -- maybe marriage makes you a better actor (laughs). I'm blessed to have a husband who's very supportive of my work. And the best part is that Sanjay really wants me to work because I get rather 'angsty' when I'm not acting, needless to say that I take it out on him. So he keeps saying, 'Don't you have something coming up soon? Please get to work." Sanjay might be a pilot, but he's super creative. In fact, he's the best storyteller in the world. He's the star between us. My profession might put me in the limelight, but he's definitely got a greater presence than me. And it's refreshing to be with someone from another field who can give me creative inputs and yet not stifle me with industry talks.

Reel love
Relationships have been an important part of our cinema, but it is unfortunate that our film industry isn't doing much to present the real picture. If you were to revisit the film archives 500 years from now, you'd find all women in short clothes dancing close to water bodies. And maybe a few bare-chested men too. This is not an accurate representation of modern women! In fact, I think that old-time films like Bandini, Raat aur Din, Mausam and many Raj Kapoor projects beautifully nuanced the woman's experience. Madhur (Bhandarkar) is among the few directors to throw the searchlight on important issues. But I'd like to see more of that happening.
