Vivek Oberoi recently gave back the vision of a young eight-year old Keralite boy through hisu00a0 mother's NGO, the Yashodhara Oberoi Foundation (YOF).
Abhijit from Trivandrum, lost his vision in an accident where he fell face forward on a stick that poked, and damaged his eyes. Apparently most hospitals weren't willing to take on his case and those that did had certain conditions attached to it. Time was running by and the child was in danger of losing his vision.
A history of charity
When Vivek learned about the boy's trauma through The Yuva Hind organisation (an NGO which looks into the health care of poor children and arranges for tax-free medical facilities) he arranged for YOF to help the boys and save his eyes.
Says a source close to the actor, "The operation cost Rs 32,000. The actor has arranged for the health care system through his mom's organisation that has been helping such cases, since January. A month ago, a 13-year old boy in an orphanage had broken his legs in an accident and the YOF had again stepped in and operated on his limbs. Today the boy has successfully recovered."
Providing healthcare
The source continues, "Vivek has sponsored the health care of 100 children in Kerala. The children have been given computerised identity cards and their health care will be taken care of. Vivek wants to cut across all religious boundaries and provide to children below the poverty all across India, starting with Kerala. He wants to make it a lakh and then 100 thousand children. It's been his dream to provide adequate health care and medical benefits to under privileged children."
Vivek says, "Post tsunami when I visited the interiors of many coastal villages I was shocked at the poor health care and medical facilities provided there. The Yashodhara Oberoi Foundation has been doing many things but I would rather not talk about the work we are doing but let actions speak for themselves."
