Zayed Khan will never forget the day his son, Zidaan first called him Dad. This Father's Day is a special occasion for Zayed. The actor, who is also soon expecting a second child in August, talks to CS about the two stars in his life -- his son Zidaan and his father, Sanjay.
Who: Zayed Khan
What: Talks about the joys of fatherhood
Where: At Aksa Beach, Malad
Son shine
I wanted to name him Zidaan because first of all, it means 'son' and secondly, Zidaan is my favourite footballer. Also, the passport looks good with his name on it -- Zidaan Zayed Khan (laughs). Every time I come home, Zidaan lights up like a bulb. The feeling is too good to put into words. He saw my film Vaada and asked me, "Dad why are you a naughty papa in this film?" He talks his heart out to me. Like every other child, he too is full of enthusiasm and honesty. Zidaan is a walking, talking radio station -- curious and observant. And sometimes he behaves more like he's my father instead of my son (laughs). The child in me comes alive when I am with him. And I miss him terribly when I'm out on shoots.
Guiding steps
Being in the profession I am, I couldn't stay home to watch him grow everyday. But I was lucky enough to be around the first time he spoke and to watch him take his first steps. I believe it is important that a parent should be there on days like when the kid makes his or her first stage performance. I always make sure that Zidaan's every small occasion becomes special. Whatever time I get, I devote to him. Whenever I am home, I take him out or play with him. Sometimes I even take him with me on my shoots, but now that he's started going to school, it's difficult.
My daddy the best
And I have a lot to thank my dad for. He gave me a memorable childhood and no matter what came his way, he kept the family together. I remember this one day when I was ten. My dad was shooting for Tipu Sultan in Jaipur. I had accompanied him to the sets. I was completely awed by the whole surrounding and dad dressed as Tipu Sultan. I witnessed the shoot and had a blast playing with all those props.
But after a severe accident on the sets of Tipu Sultan, I went to meet him in the hospital. I was devastated to see him bed ridden and broken. As I went closer to him, he said, "Don't worry son I will complete Tipu Sultan and build the best health spa in the world." Which he eventually did, within seven years against all odds. His strong will has been my inspiration throughout. My dad's tenacity is something that I want to pass on to my son.
