Kapoor was born in Mumbai on October 18th, 1977. His father, Kishore Kapoor, was in the construction business, while his mother, Kanan, is a singer and homemaker. Though Kunal started his career with `Meenaxi: A Tale of Three Cities,` directed by the legendary M.F. Husain, his most memorable performance came in the form of his role as Aslam in the critically acclaimed movie `Rang De Basanti.`
