Janhvi Kapoor: Instinct is an artiste’s superpower

Janhvi, whose Bawaal is drawing polarising reactions, on staying true to art without worrying about online chatter

Janhvi Kapoor’s Bawaal has turned out to be one of the most polarising films of the year so far. While many have criticised the Nitesh Tiwari-directed venture for drawing parallels between the Holocaust and marital woes, a section of the audience has appreciated Varun Dhawan and Kapoor’s performances. 

Even as she is mindful of the audience’s concerns, Kapoor believes in working towards becoming the artiste she hopes to be. “If you keep thinking what people on social media will think, your craft will suffer. We have a social responsibility. We want to be humble, and not be tone-deaf. But as artistes, we can’t be crippled either. Instinct is an artiste’s superpower. The medium [of cinema] is about a director and writer’s voice, and how an actor is interpreting a story. You can only give it to the world and see what they have to say,” she shares.

Next up for the actor is Ulajh, and the Telugu film, Devara. Going forward, she intends to focus only on one project at a time. “We all want to do one film at a time. As an actor, you are greedy to do all the work. But then, it is important to go all in, in a story.”
