Her multiple chart-toppers—including her recent hit, Heeriye—are testimony that Jasleen Royal has her finger on the pulse of music consumers of this era. Evidently then, her latest single, Assi sajna, touted as her debut in the pop music space, was expected to pique curiosity.

“While it isn’t an intentional effort, I find myself drawn to [genres] that I haven’t attempted before. I avoid carrying the pressure of the success of my past hits while releasing new songs, because, sometimes, a song becomes popular several years after it first releases. This has happened with several songs of mine,” she says.
Pointing out that her numbers, including Din shagna da, climbed the music charts three years after its initial release, Royal says that for independent artistes, every popular number can be an inroad for a new listener to explore the rest of their catalogue.
“Often people tell me that I can’t outperform my last hit. After Ranjha, everyone said I couldn’t deliver a bigger hit. I tell them that I don’t create music with that attitude. I simply compose with love. I followed that up with Heeriye.” Her personal journey, she says, is the best fodder for her musical creations. “It is perhaps the honesty that is reflected in the track that draws my fans to my songs.”
