During a 2015 episode of 'Comedy Nights With Kapil', Dhawan, along with Shah Rukh Khan and Kajol, was promoting their film 'Dilwale'. Host Kapil Sharma said that he remembered watching Dilwale Dulhaniya Le Jaayenge in a theatre – his mother was convinced that SRK and Kajol were an off-screen couple!
Varun chimed in with a similar anecdote, revealing that he had also assumed Shah Rukh Khan and Kajol were a real-life couple until he met Gauri Khan, Shah Rukh Khan’s actual wife. noting that his mother also believed the duo was married off-screen. Dhawan recalled, “Bachpan mein mujhe bhi aisa lagta tha (I used to think the same when I was a child). I thought you all were married. Till I met Gauri (Khan) ma’am, obviously.”
He recalled a childhood incident when he had visited Shah Rukh Khan's house, Mannat, to collect funds for a charity along with his friends. He was taken aback when Gauri opened the door. Dhawan humorously recollected, “Mujhe kuch galat laga uss waqt (I felt something was wrong at that time)."
In true King Khan style, Shah Rukh couldn't resist having a laugh at Varun's expense. He hilariously reenacted what Varun must've felt like, joking, “Tum kaun ho? Kajol ke ghar mein kya kar rahi ho tum (Who are you and what are you doing in Kajol’s house)?”
Good thing Varun's mom set the record straight. She had to explain to him that Shah Rukh was married to Gauri and Kajol to Ajay Devgn. That's one funny childhood mix-up we won't forget soon!
