Mrunal Thakur, who will explore the subject of stalking with Pooja Meri Jaan, says film will showcase a different facet of her craft

New story, new me

Mrunal Thakur

It has been a heady past few months for Mrunal Thakur, who has received much love for her Telugu debut, Sita Ramam. She hopes to repeat the success with her next, Pooja Meri Jaan. Above all else, she wishes that the film, which explores the subjects of stalking and the threatening side of romantic proposals, initiates a dialogue about covert harassment. Understanding that the subject needed to be handled sensitively, Thakur prepped intensely before reporting to the shoot of Navjot Gulati’s directorial venture.

“To begin with, Mrunal read news reports related to such incidents that are unfortunately not uncommon in India. She also watched movies, including Black Christmas [1974], Fear [1996], and The Gift [2015] that have a similar theme. Reading the script many times over, and discussions with the director helped her understand the character better,” reveals a source.

Thakur considers Pooja Meri Jaan, which also stars Huma Qureshi and Vijay Raaz, among her most important offerings. With the project, she wants to showcase a distinct facet of her craft. “Pooja is different from my character in Sita Ramam. From the way Pooja dresses, to the way she talks, I’ve created a new person. I have always been hungry for diverse roles, and am grateful that the directors chose me,” she says.
