Filmmaker Onir speaks about his project ‘We Are’ being rejected by the Defence ministry

Onir
Filmmaker Onir`s latest film `We Are` based on the life of a queer Major, was recently rejected by the Defence ministry. Sharing his thoughts about the incident Onir told mid-day.com, "I was sad, not shocked. My story was based on a real person. Why are people not speaking up for me? Is it because my story does not incite hate? My story is a love story or is it because queer people don’t matter as much? Though my film was discussed in the parliament it didn`t get much support. That also shows the double standards of the government. It`s a story inspired by real incidents that seeks equal rights for the community, why should it threaten anybody?"
Reacting to film that have potrayed the LGBTQIA+ community as characters to be mocked at, the filmmaker adds, "I would want to look back at my life and think that every brick I laid was positive and not a stone thrown at someone. I’d rather be a part of building something beautiful than contributing to violence and hatred. I don’t judge my work in reference to something else but a growth in my own life. As long as I can touch some lives, I’m happy, I don’t need 100 crores."
