Unpredicted successes, tried-and-tested themes, remixes and finally a film soundtrack worthy of all the attention — revisiting the songs that made us groove (or cry) this year

Rewind 2021: Brown munde, Raatan lambiya, Manike mage hithe - revisiting songs of this year

Raatan Lambiya

Raanjha and Raatan lambiya
Film: Shershaah

Both the tracks from Sidharth Malhotra and Kiara Advani’s Shershaah were enjoyed by fans in India and overseas. They featured on the Billboard Global Excl US charts on the 28th and 73rd spots respectively. Singers Asees Kaur, B Praak, and Jasleen Royal were associated with the numbers.

Manike mage hithe
Singer: Yohani

Social media played a vital role in propelling Sri Lankan singer Yohani to unexpected stardom. Her May release, Manike mage hithe was lapped up by Instagram users for the making of reels. Soon enough, she was rubbing shoulders with the film industry’s brightest.

Kasoor
Music: Prateek Kuhad

The acoustic version of Prateek Kuhad’s Kasoor found a place in Kartik Aaryan’s Dhamaka. Kuhad had received immense acclaim for the original, which released in 2020. Creating a cinematic adaptation enabled it to reach a wider audience.

Enjoy enjaami
Singers: Dhee and Arivu

The Tamil track produced by Santhosh Narayanan had been rendered by his daughter Dhee, and rapper Arivu. Created as an homage to the Tamil culture, the song, which discussed civilisation and natural resources, broke several records, and was lauded for its visual appeal and theme.

Saiyaan ji
Singer: Yo Yo Honey Singh

Nushrratt Bharuccha and Yo Yo Honey Singh have collaborated on several dance tracks like Chote chote peg and Dil chori. However, it is owing to the appreciation that Saiyaan ji received from fans that this track became among the top performing ones on YouTube.

Nadiyon paar
Film: Roohi

Although we’re reminded of what Vishal Dadlani told us when discussing successful remixes (“A hit song becoming a hit song again, is a no-brainer”), this Janhvi Kapoor-starrer took no time to make its way to people’s play-lists. Of course, Shamur’s evergreen track is delightfully peppy, but Kapoor’s dance moves also contributed to this version’s  success.

Famous
Music: Arjun Kanungo

Famous is aimed at spreading positivity. Kanungo, who penned the track, had apparently revealed that it urges people to  deal with negativity and build “loyalty towards your work and life”. Released
in April, the song had him collaborate with musician King.

Lut gaye
Music: Tanishk Bagchi

Weeks ago, YouTube revealed that Emraan Hashmi-starrer Lut gaye was the most watched video on the channel. Penned by Manoj Muntashir for composer Tanishk Bagchi, the single is part of an album of the same name.

Chaka chak
Film: Atrangi Re

Composer AR Rahman’s track for Sara Ali Khan and Dhanush’s Atrangi Re was complemented by the choreography, touted as Khan’s first solo dance piece. It found favour among social media users, with several fans recreating the dance set, and enabling it to reach more accounts.

Brown munde
Music: AP Dhillon, Gurinder Gill, Shinda Kahlon’s

Although it released towards the end of 2020, rappers AP Dhillon, Gurinder Gill and Shinda Kahlon’s Brown munde was among the top performing songs of 2021 on a popular music streaming application. The Canadian trio has been ruling the charts in the UK.
