In a landmark decision, the BCCI on Thursday announced equal match fees for its centrally-contracted female and male players in a bid to tackle gender discrimination. The move was welcomed and celebrated by many on social media.

Commenting on the move, superstar Shah Rukh Khan, who also co-owns an IPL team tweeted, "What a good front foot shot. Sports being such an equaliser ( in  more ways than one ) hoping it will pave the way for others to follow."

Actress Taapsee Pannu too lauded the move. "A huge step towards equal pay for equal work. Thank you BCCI for leading with example," she tweeted. Taapsee, who is also a sports enthusiast, had recently essayed the role of former Indian team cricket captain, Mithali Raj in the film based on her life. The film is titled 'Shabaash Mithu' and is currently streaming on Netflix.

Anushka Sharma shared the news on her Instagram stories and shared clapping emojis. The actress is currently shooting for a film based on the life of cricketer Jhulan Goswami. Titled 'Chakda Xpress', Anushka will be seen playing the cricketer who recently retired from the game.

We are implementing pay equity policy for our contracted @BCCIWomen cricketers. The match fee for both Men and Women Cricketers will be same as we move into a new era of gender equality in Cricket," Shah tweeted.

As per the newly introduced system, the Indian women's cricketers will now receive Rs 15 lakh per Test, Rs 6 lakh per ODI, and Rs 3 lakh per T20I, the same as their male counterparts.
