Singer Jahnvi Shrimankar, riding high on the success of ‘Dholida’ from the Alia Bhatt starrer ‘Gangubai Kathiawadi’ opens up to mid-day.com about the hit number.
How were you approached for ‘Dholida’?
I had given my voice for backup vocals for ‘Saawariya’ in 2007 and that was my first experience of recording in a studio. Thankfully I started off with a film with ‘Saawariya,’ one of Bhansaliji’s masterpieces. It was a great learning experience and he would hear us all because he was present throughout the film. He had said he liked my voice around 15 years ago, and invited me to sing ‘Dholida’ as lead vocalist.

What was the process of recording the song like?
Recording for Bhansaliji’s film is a process. He likes to experiment with what works. I recorded the song 3-4 times, we would try different lyrics each time. We worked on how each word sounded, it was important for the character. The alaap that I sing in the beginning was also finalized after various trials.

Did you always know you wanted to make singing your profession?
Since I was in college, there was an incident that made me realize that I have a strong connection with music and singing. I was lucky my teachers helped me with it.
