The year was 1989 and the date was 29 December, when history was written in golden words. It was on this date when the Salman Khan-Bhagyashree starrer ‘Maine Pyar Kiya’ was released. This film went onto become a box office hit and catapulted the careers of many.

Mid-Day Online caught up with the chirpy Bhagyashree, who had made her Bollywood debut with that film. She walked the memory lane with us and revealed some unknown, untold and extremely interesting facts about the film, including the names who had auditioned for the leading man's role before Salman Khan was finalized.

Lata Mangeshkar ji had recorded all the songs in one day!
Yes, its true. Because Lata Mangeshkar ji had to fly abroad, she recorded all the songs in one day!

I did not wear jeans for the first time !
Unlike the popular belief that I wore jeans for the first time in my life for the film, the fact is that, I wore jeans after a long time. When I passed out of school, my father said ‘enough of jeans’. That’s why, during my entire college days, I did not wear jeans at all! (smiles).

Was it Salman Khan who had recommended Mohnish Bahl’s name to the Barjatyas?
Well… that’s what even I have heard.

Too many names doing the rounds about the film’s leading man before Salman Khan was finalized…
Before Salman Khan was finalized, there were many who were auditioned for the film. I don’t know about other names, but, the ones whom I know about are Sanjay Kapoor, Kunal Goswami and the Bengali actor Prosenjit Chatterjee.

‘Maine Pyar Kiya’ was released with only 29 prints!
Yes… its true that ‘Maine Pyar Kiya’ had got released with only 29 prints to begin with. The film’s makers were confident that the word of mouth publicity will surely help the film gain momentum. Based on that, they had planned to come up with more prints, which they eventually did.

I did not even audition for the film!
As far as I know, I was the first and last choice for the film’s heroine. I did not even audition for the film. Suraj ji was very keen on having me as the leading lady for the film. Before that and after that, I really don’t have any clue (about other names).

I had no intention of getting into the acting career...
I did not realize how important ‘Maine Pyar Kiya’ will be in my life. Its only by chance that I said yes to the film. I had no intention of getting into the acting career. And it was only during the course of the film, I fell in love with acting. ‘Maine Pyar Kiya’ simply changed my life forever.

None of the shots in the film were more than three takes
None of the shots in the film were more than three takes. Even for the dance and fights sequences, it was okayed in maximum three takes. All credit goes to the film’s cinematographer Aravind Laad ji and Suraj ji to have such immense confidence in the film as well as the film’s cast. Those days, it was just film prints, unlike today’s times, when we have digital monitors wherein you can have umpteen number of takes.
