According to The Hollywood Reporter, the network wants the new lead female character to have "the smarts" of Katniss Everdeen and be a "smart superhero for a new generation".

NBC's Entertainment Chairman Bob Greenblatt confirmed that the revival is in the "early stages", and that they are looking for a writer to pen the new series.

"I don't think it's just a continuation, but we haven't gotten that far. I think it's a great character and we should try to figure out how to revive it somehow," Greenblatt explained, confirming that Sam Raimi and Rob Tapert will return as producers.

Lucy Lawless - who played Xena in the original series - recently suggested that the reboot could be happening without her as she has had no contact from NBC.

However, Greenblatt said that no decisions have been made about Lawless's involvement.

"We'd love to have Lucy be a part of it - if we felt that her presence didn't overshadow the direction we take with it.

I'm not sure how she could be part of it if she wasn't playing Xena and I don't know if that's a direction we'll ever go," he said.
