A round-up of some celebs who dominated the 88th Academy Awards red carpet and others who failed to impress

2016 Oscar red carpet: The good, bad and ugly dressers

Charlize Theron, Jennifer Lawrence and Priyanka Chopra

The Oscar red carpet is easily the most scrutinised of all sartorial events and this year, the fashion was mostly restrained and sophisticated with plunging necklines and sequins ruling the roost. To the fashion police's relief, there were hardly any outrageous outfits. Let's get down to judging the good, the bad and the plain disappointing numbers at the 88th Academy Awards:

Charlize Theron

With a recurring spot on the best-dressed list, Theron impressed yet again. Avoiding red on the red carpet is usually considered a wise move, but trust Theron to break the norm and so gracefully at that. Donning an ultra-sexy, plunging neckline with a diamond necklace as her main accessory, the actress stole the limelight at the ceremony.

Priyanka Chopra

Everything about this look spelled elegance, right from the understated hairdo to the jewellery. The actress flirted with the oh-so-naughty and oh-so-nice line quite effortlessly. Only if the gown didn't remind us so much of Beyonce's inimitable style. Also loose, messy curls might have elevated the overall look.

Jennifer Lawrence

At first glance, everything about this look feels surreal, and the feeling stays. To no one's surprise, the actress turned up in a Dior dress and looked radiant in the lace number. Folding her platinum blonde tresses to a sleek bob, the actress looked chic, but not understated by any stretch. We are sold!

Naomi Watts

We had been hoping for an ombre-heavy look on the red carpet, and we got it in all its brilliance. Watts sauntered down the red carpet in a breathtaking glittery gown that almost seemed to exude the many colours of the ocean. We'd also be willing to bet our money on the fact that this look might make it to the list of iconic looks that shall be written and spoken about for years to come.

Cate Blanchett

The Oscar nominee stunned in an Armani gown embellished heavily with soft spearmint and pink flowers, reminiscent of her 2014 Oscar number adorned with Swarovski diamonds. With her bronze smoky eyes and unusual colour, the attire almost has us excited for spring. This unconventional gown is not one most people can carry.

Thumbs down

Olivia Wilde

That pleated skirt and the Grecian hairdo is close to perfect. But why she makes it to this list is because of that hideous collar. However, this dress has put many a fashion critic on the fence with some praising it to high heavens and the rest calling it anything from 'ugly' to a 'terrible mistake.'

Heidi Klum

How does the actress with such a body of work in the fashion industry and a body like that manage to make such a dreadful blunder? Klum sported what looked like a chiffon purple robe with many under whelming shades of purple along with huge flowers on her neck and waist. Shall we discuss the dress a bit more? We think not.

Kate Winslet

The talented actress wrapped herself in what appeared to be a metallic garbage bag. The over-the-top shiny black gown did nothing for Winslet. The epic fashion faux pas is forgivable though since the Internet was obsessing over the long sought Leo and Kate reunion.

Reese Witherspoon

We are used to seeing her in classy and tasteful numbers. Imagine our horror then as we saw her walking down the crimson rug in an ill-fitting purple dress that made her stand out for all the wrong reasons.

Sofia Vergara

With a body like hers, you can't possibly go wrong, and there wasn't anything majorly amiss with this one either, except that we have seen her sport the same body hugging, mermaid-inspired dress so many times that it made us yawn a couple of times before swiftly moving on.
