'Barbie' star Margot Robbie opens up on Oscars snubs: There’s no way to feel sad when...

Margot Robbie as Barbie

The Oscars 2024 nominations were announced last month. The biggest disappointment came in the form of the Greta Gerwig's directorial ‘Barbie’ as it failed to get nominated in the Best Director and Actress in a Leading Role categories. The film collected nods for best picture, supporting actress (America Ferrera), supporting actor (Ryan Gosling), adapted screenplay (Greta Gerwig and Noah Baumbach), costume design, production design, and original songs ('I’m Just Ken' and 'What Was I Made For?') After actors America Ferraro and Ryan Gosling expressed their disappointment, 'Barbie' star Margot Robbie has broken her silence on getting excluded from the nominations.

According to a report in Variety, Margot said that Greta deserved a nomination. "There’s no way to feel sad when you know you’re this blessed. Obviously, I think Greta should be nominated as a director. What she did is a once-in-a-career, once-in-a-lifetime thing. What she pulled off, it really is. But it’s been an incredible year for all the films.” She also said that she is "beyond ecstatic" at Barbie receiving eight nods at the Oscars.

“Everyone getting the nods that they’ve had is just incredible, and the best picture nod. We set out to do something that would shift culture, affect culture, just make some sort of impact. And it’s already done that and some, way more than we ever dreamed it would. And that is truly the biggest reward that could come out of all of this. People’s reactions to the movie have been the biggest reward of this entire experience. Whether it’s seeing what people are writing online, or even just seeing how much pink I can see in this room right now…I’ve never been a part of something like this. Not like this. I’ve done comic book stuff and that gets a big reaction, but this felt very different. It still feels very different. And I can’t think of a time when a movie’s had this effect on culture. And it’s amazing to be in the eye of the storm,” the 'Barbie' star added.

America Ferrera and Ryan Gosling express disappointment:

America Ferrera who shone with her performance as the human Gloria in 'Barbie' won her first Academy Awards nomination in the Best Supporting actor category. Reacting to the female force behind the film getting snubbed at the Oscars, she told Variety, "I was incredibly disappointed that they weren’t nominated."  She further explained, “Greta has done just about everything that a director could do to deserve it. Creating this world, and taking something that didn’t have inherent value to most people and making it a global phenomenon. It feels disappointing to not see her on that list.”

Actor Ryan Gosling released a statement after his co-star and director were not acknowledged by The Academy Awards. Citing that there is no existence of Ken without Barbie he said, “But there is no Ken without Barbie, and there is no Barbie movie without Greta Gerwig and Margot Robbie, the two people most responsible for this history-making, globally celebrated film. No recognition would be possible for anyone on the film without their talent, grit and genius. To say that I’m disappointed that they are not nominated in their respective categories would be an understatement.”
