A four-day centenary festival of the legendary carnatic musician, late MS Subbulakshmi, will begin on Sunday, September 13, with the presentation of ‘Sri Shanmukhananda Dr. MS Subbulakshmi Sangeetha Pracharya’ special award to Radha Viswanathan, the 80-year-old daughter of MS Subbulakshmi, by the governor of Maharashtra Vidyasagar Rao.

“The Sabha has created a portrait gallery in her memory and also installed a 5ft.6 in height statue in the Sabha foyer,” said Dr. V Shankar, President of Shanmukhananda Sabha.

The Governor of Telangana, ESL Narasimhan, will be conferring the Sangeetha Pracharya award to versatile percussionist Dr. TK Murthy. The 90-year-old mruthangist had accompanied the doyen for 55 years for concerts across the globe from the age of 15.

The Chief Minister of Kerala, Oomen Chandy, will be presenting the Pracharya award to centenarian Kathakali dancer from Kerala, Kunhiraman Nair, on the following day and the Chief minister of Maharashtra, Devendra Fadnavis, will confer 50 fellowships named after MS to young and promising musicians on the concluding day. This will be followed by the release of a special postal cover on ‘MS’ by the P&T department.

MS Subbulakshmi’s association with Shanmukhananda Sabha

MS Subbulakshmi was associated with the Shanmukhananda Sabha for nearly five decades, said Shankar. Several concerts, that today form part of the reservoir of her music, were rendered in the Sabha.

“Incidentally, MS saw her husband, Sadashivam, first in 1936 in a train while coming from then Madras to Bombay for a performance for the Sabha, then their relations developed,” said Shankar.
