The voice-over hunt for scribes in the city is no PR exercise, insists music director Ricky Kej. his aim, he says, is to create a Database of local talent

Music director Ricky Kej is on a hunt. In search of talented voice-over artistes, the young musician has partnered with Guruji.com, to invite scribes in the city to take part in the contest.u00a0u00a0u00a0u00a0

"Voice-over artistes have ample opportunities these days. They get to lend their voice for radio jingles and television ads. They can be dubbing artistes and work as ad-narrators. It's a lucrative and exciting avenue," he explains.

What led you to launch such a contest?
There is a shortage of voice-over talent in Bangalore. There is a lot of work originating out of agencies in Bangalore, but they end up recording voice-over artistes in Mumbai because of the lack of options here. I am trying to create a database of voice-over artistes in Bangalore who can work in languages like Kannada, Hindi, English, Tamil, Telugu, Malayalam and Marathi. This way we get to retain work within Bangalore as well as recognise talent.

Why a talent hunt among journalists? Won't it be construed as a PR exercise?
This first round is exclusively for journalists, because journalists by virtue of their profession have what it takes to be voice-over artistes. Journalists usually come from a Mass Communications background and understand branding and advertising. They understand media, and have a good command over language. I've noticed that their diction is also good.

So how is your contest going to be different?
Simple. My contest has no winners. We are only creating a database of voices. If clients like the voice, then the artiste gets to lend his/her voice to the project, and get heard on radio/TV and make good money too.

What skills are you looking for in the participants?
Good diction, good command over language, professional approach (being punctual rates very high in my books), patience and the ability to emote through the voice.

Is there any registration fee to be paid? There is no fee. Interested people can send an e-mail to studiobackup@gmail.com and we will get back to them with the date and time for voice sampling.
