Kamal Haasan, the president of the Makkal Needhi Maiam (MNM) party, handed over a cheque of Rs.3 Lakh and assured assistance to M. Sharmila, Coimbatore’s first woman bus driver, in her entrepreneurial endeavors. He also pledged assistance to her by acquiring a seven seater Multi Utility Vehicle (MUV) car on behalf of the “Kamal Panbattu Maiam” (Kamal Cultural Centre) to further her driver-entrepreneur aspiration.

Sharmila recently submitted her resignation to a private agency following an alleged dispute with the conductor and operator. During this time, Lok Sabha Member of Parliament Kanimozhi (DMK) honored Sharmila and even traveled alongside her on the bus. Recognizing Sharmila’s determination and dedication, Haasan personally handed over the 3 Lakh cheque to her on June 26, 2023, as confirmed by her father, K. Mahesh.

In a press statement, Mr Haasan acknowledged, “Sharmila was the first private bus driver in Coimbatore, like Veeralakshmi, the first woman driver of the Tamil Nadu State Transport Corporation, Vasanthakumari, and the first woman ambulance driver. She has worked hard to achieve her dream of becoming a bus driver”

With Haasan’s contribution and support, Sharmila is now all set to embark on her entrepreneurial endeavor with renewed enthusiasm and resources

Recently, Kamal Hasaan also joined the much-anticipated sci-fi film 'Project K,' crafted by acclaimed filmmaker Nag Ashwin. It is widely regarded as one of the most significant Indian films to watch out for. Reflecting on this remarkable cast, Haasan shared, "Fifty years ago, when I worked as a dance assistant and assistant director, Ashwini Dutt's name held immense weight in the production sector. Now, after five decades, we are joining forces once again. Nag Ashwin, an exceptional director from the new generation, is leading the way. My co-stars, Mr. Prabhas and Ms. Deepika, also belong to this talented generation. While I have previously worked with Amit Ji, every collaboration feels like a fresh experience. Amit Ji continues to reinvent himself, and I find inspiration in that inventive process. I eagerly await 'Project K,' and regardless of the role bestowed upon me by the audience, my unwavering passion for cinema will applaud any new endeavor in the industry. Let my applause be the first for 'Project K.' With the visionary direction of Nag Ashwin, I am confident that this applause will reverberate across our nation and the global cinema landscape.
