Coolie is every bit an event film, marking Rajinikanth’s 50 years in Indian cinema. For Shruti Haasan, however, filmmaker Lokesh Kanagaraj’s spectacle holds personal meaning. It marks her first collaboration with Rajinikanth, who was her father and superstar Kamal Haasan’s frequent co-star through the 1970s and 1980s. “It’s a full circle moment. When Lokesh told me Rajini sir is in the film, I was so happy. Dad and he have shared such wonderful cinematic moments. It has been heartening to work with Rajini sir,” she beams.

As the daughter of the legend, Shruti has been privy to stardom since childhood. Does starring in Coolie, which is pegged on Rajinikanth’s stardom, give her clarity on what such popularity means to her? “I realised early on that what people project and who they are, are very different. I decided to never fall into the trap of pretending to be someone else.”
