The volatile nature of an infinite series often leaves makers at the mercy of cast members, whose decision to leave a show has them in a bind. Fans of Disha Vakani, popularly known as Dayaben from the television show 'Taarak Mehta Ka Ooltah Chashmah', were disheartened to learn of the actor's departure from the family-drama. Quick to sense audience sentiment, the makers, who were initially contemplating on roping in a replacement, have instead decided to offer Vakani an extended leave.
A source tells mid-day that the actor, who requested to call time on her stint on the show since she's expecting her first child, will return after her pregnancy leave. "The makers don't want to replace Disha. She is an integral part of the show. They will concentrate on the other characters in her absence."
It was speculated that Vakani would be replaced by Giaa Manek, but an official statement hadn't been made. Producer Asit Modi tells mid-day, "Disha is working at the moment, so, we've not thought of the next step," he says, adding that he is also unaware about the actor's last working day.
The makers are utilising Vakani's availability to can five to six episodes in one day. "This ensures that she doesn't have to keep returning to the set. Makers have taken close-ups shots and will also arrange shoots at her home," he adds.
The show recently completed nine years. Marking the special episode were Shah Rukh Khan and Anushka Sharma, who promoted their upcoming film, Jab Harry Met Sejal. A source from the set says, "SRK and Anushka danced with Jethalal (Dilip Joshi) and Dayaben. Considering SRK has been on the set several times, he knows everyone, and hence gave them personalised gifts." Vakani remained unavailable for comment.
