Role and character aside, Sangita Ghosh on what convinced her to come on board Swaran Ghar

Sangita Ghosh

Known to give mature and realistic performances, Sangita Ghosh went against the grain when she did the fantasy show, Divya Drishti. The actor claims that she wanted to “break barriers and not think, but physically it was an exerting experience.” After a year’s break, Ghosh is back on the tube with Swaran Ghar opposite Ronit Roy. While it seems the show has taken inspiration from the Amitabh Bachchan and Hema Malini-starrer Baghban (2003), the actor insists that the daily soap is “different”.

For any actor, the story and the character would often take precedence to sign up for a show. Ghosh insists that the makers helped her arrive at the decision easily. “When you do a television show, you are working together to tell a story every day. It is important that the sensibilities and the passion of the makers match yours. Their passion trickles down to the actors, especially since I emotionally connect with the shows I take up. I found that here,” she says. It helped that producers Ravi Dubey and Sargun Mehta hail from an acting background. “As actors, they have seen how producers function for years, and have had the desire to do things differently. Their degree of passion is on another level.”

Asked if she believes the OTT boom has compelled television show makers to pull up their socks and concentrate on content, Ghosh says that the medium has had many ups and downs. “TV has gone through various phases over the years. Shows like Buniyaad, Tamas, and Hum Log were way ahead of their time. Even in comedies, we’ve had path-breaking content with Jaspal Bhatti’s Flop Show, Waghle Ki Duniya, Yeh Jo Hai Zindagi, among others. Content has always been king, much before the OTT boom. Television didn’t wake up to it now,” she explains. But the actor admits that when shows go on for too long, they sometimes lose direction. “You tend to get attached to the character and its emotions, but that is where you change its course. Sometimes, when you feel your character is not relatable, we try and change it. That is why it is important to know who you are working with. I will never look down upon television.”
