It’s homecoming for Aahana Kumra as she gears up to share the stage with Makarand Deshpande for Sir Sir Sarla. Kumra, like many of her peers in Bollywood, is a product of the theatre world and had first been part of the much-loved play during Diwali 2012. In a happy coincidence, the actor will reunite with the cast to perform today, on the occasion of Diwali, at Prithvi Theatre in Juhu. Elated to return to her roots, she says, “It was the stage that made me an artiste, and while I have done television, films, and [web] shows later, I will always have a special connection with theatre.”

The four-character play, penned and helmed by Deshpande, sees Kumra play the titular role of Sarla with the director slipping into the role of the professor aka Sir. Rehearsing with the cast has been an emotional ride for the actor. “This Diwali performance after nine years is not only symbolic of life coming full circle, but has also brought a sense of nostalgia. It reminds me of how it all started. My love for theatre is unparalleled, and I know that no matter what heights I reach, I will be in touch with my roots,” says Kumra, who recently had a release in Call My Agent: Bollywood.
