As a part of the two-day workshop, students will get an introduction to the Obvara technique a centuries-old method of pottery-making that involves scalding the finish on the pottery to seal the porous surface. The earthenware is heated to temperatures almost as high as 900°C and then dipped into a yeast mixture before being dunked in water to rapidly cool the piece.
Hanif will then teach basic wheel work, as well as how to make coil pots and pinch pots. Each student will make four articles: two handmade pots and two wheel pots. The clay articles will then be fired. Participants will also learn what goes into the making of the Obvara mixture and how to handle the pottery to produce stunning pieces ranging from off-white to almost black. No prior experience is required to sign up for this workshop.
