This weekend, three acclaimed EDM acts from The Netherlands up the ante at a free concert in Lower Parel
Crowds throng an earlier edition of Awestrung

How often do you get the opportunity to attend a gig featuring international artistes without paying a penny? The good news is that you can do it this Friday at the upcoming edition of Awestrung, which will showcase Dutch EDM stars Sandro Silva, Chocolate Puma and Kill the Buzz, as well as Delhi boy Sartek.
Since its inception in April 2015, Awestrung has featured top acts in the country, from Indi-Pop veterans like Lucky Ali and Euphoria to Alternative Rock band Zero, with the latter reuniting especially for the show. Other memorable acts include Mame Khan, Nucleya, Maati Baani, Parikrama and Prem Joshua.
The line-ups, curated by city-based music artiste and event management company, Shark & Ink, span genres, throwing up a surprise-filled mixed bag of acts every month.

Going global
What makes the upcoming show exciting is that Awestrung is set to showcase an international line-up of artistes, which is a rarity for a free-entry gig. “Stalwarts like Sandro Silva, Chocolate Puma and Kill the Buzz have a tremendous following here and it’s almost impossible for people to catch them live without paying a steep price,” says Amit Sawant, head of marketing, High Street Phoenix and Palladium, which hosts the event.
All three artistes have been crucial to the Dutch music landscape. Chocolate Puma have been belting out chart-toppers since the 1990s, continuously reinventing themselves under various monikers to keep the House music scene alive. Sandro Silva, meanwhile, has been touted as the future sound of Electro, and has played at EDC, Electric Zoo, TomorrowWorld and Amnesia. Kill the Buzz (the alias used by Adithya Nanuru) started producing music at the age of 10 and has played at some of the biggest festivals in the world, including Tomorrowland. The show will also feature Indian DJ Sartek.
Shunning genres
Awestrung, the founders tell us, was born out of the need to support original live music in the country. “The city has a dearth of open-air venues where people can let their hair down and enjoy a concert,” says Sawant.
He adds that aside from well-known acts, they have also showcased upcoming talent like Achint & The Shalimar Orchestra, Laxmi Bomb, and Shivai. “It stretches the experience beyond catching your favourite artiste live -- it gives you the chance to discover fresh homegrown talent.”
While some gigs are held at clubs that lay down entry rules, at Awestrung, there’s none of that. The event sees people from every age group coming in, college kids to even senior citizens.
We hear the organisers have some cool acts lined up for the next edition (March 31), including Prateek Kuhad and Rock band The Local Train.
On February 24, 6.30 pm onwards
At Courtyard, High Street Phoenix, Lower Parel.
