If you’re taking a morning stroll at Kandivali’s Thakur Village this Sunday, don’t be surprised to find yourself amidst yoga practitioners, Folk dancers and street play performances. All this and more is going to be a part of Street Konnect, a new initiative taken up by the residents of the locality, with an aim to foster community spirit. “The idea is to create a space wherein people in the community can connect beyond the boundaries of their housing complexes and comfortable groups. This is a community-funded project and around 200 individuals from the locality have contributed to make Street Konnect happen,” says one of the co-organisers of the event.

What’s in store
Sporting a festive look, a street opposite one of the building complexes, will be divided into different zones — kids, fitness, art, innovation and free zone — with individuals showcasing unconventional works in each one.

“For example, one can participate in a World Folk dance workshop in the free zone, practise guided meditation and yoga in the fitness zone and kids can enjoy storytelling through dance.

We’ve also put up food stalls,” adds the co-organiser. Open to residents beyond Thakur Village as well, between 500 and 1,000 individuals are expected to show up for the event. Depending on the response, the organisers are keen to make Street Konnect a fare more regular community event.

“ We believe that a concept like this could bring the neighbourhood closer, encourage empathy, lead to sharing of knowledge and resources, bring about networking, recognise latent talent and become a catalyst to the process of community exchange. We would be happy if something like this takes place almost every week,” shares a resident of Thakur Village.
