Art Brussels, a contemporary art fair that is currently taking place at the Brussels Expo, accommodates a jaw-dropping 29,000 visitors over four days.

As a responsive curator of art, Abhay Maskara feels the need to focus on emerging art practices and unconstrained artistic expression. Abraham George, Shine Shivan and T Venkanna, the three artists curated by Maskara to present their work at Art Brussels, clarify his objectives.

(M)other Tongue, as the name and the idea behind it goes, questions the relevance of one’s “place” and “language” in a diverse environment. Born in the 1980s and residing in Southern India, the three artists are as similar as dissimilar.

In spite of their geographical proximity and similar age, they are surprisingly different. Not just in language, but in artistic expressions as well.

Portraying such diverse dimensions in the heart of Europe, completely out of their usual socio-cultural context, embolden the differences. “It highlights and celebrates the very differences that make both life and art — rich with diversity and meaning,” adds Maskara.

The participation of three Indian artists with such diverse connotations in Art Brussels does what Maskara states as the mission statement of the gallery — Exhibit and Promote Art of the Present.
