“Museums are a fascinating world. They tell stories of the past, which connect closely with our present. Museum-going is a culture that needs to be imbibed into our society. Recently, museums have been making a steady effort in this direction. This habit is best inculcated in childhood. Thus, the idea of a kids’ club,” explains Bilwa Kulkarni, education officer at Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Vastu Sangrahalaya (CSMVS). Starting July 1, CSMVS will be inviting applications for children aged between six to 14 years. Synonymous with unique activities and artworks that encourage art from across India and the world, the Museum Kids’ Club promises to be a great initiative to familiarise children with art.

Kulkarni shares, “CSMVS has been conducting educational activities, workshops, gallery walkthroughs for city kids for a while, but we have had little chance of building a long-term relation with them. Children may participate in one activity but may not come back for the next one. The idea of having a Kids’ Club is to get them involved not just with the activity but also with the Museum in its entirety.” Given that the learning will happen in a fun and informal setting, it goes without saying that the young mind will tend to absorb more.

Though limited in terms of age as of now, Kulkarni feels that all age groups can be accommodated, depending on the response. To be held on Saturdays or Sundays, the kids can enjoy workshops, trails and activities; from miniature paintings, Stone Age, archaeology, pottery, zoology (animals and birds from the natural history section) to war technology and even geometry. These kids will also get to see their creations at the museum, “These will be posted regularly on our Facebook page and other social media. If their work is exceptionally good, it may even be displayed at the Museum,” adds Kulkarni.
