Hindu mythological texts

The story of Ahalya has been told and retold in different versions in Hindu mythological texts, Ramayana and Mahabharata. In one popular version of this story, Indra takes up the form of Ahalya’s husband to sexually engage with her. Later, Ahalya is cursed and turned into a stone by her husband, sage Gautam.

The story came into the spotlight recently with filmmaker Sujoy Ghosh’s (of Kahaani fame) recent popular short film titled, Ahalya. Amit Govind, founder of the Katha Project (who are organising the event) and a student of comparative mythology informs that the workshop will be a look at the story from different perspectives.

“What if Ahalya knew what she was doing? The story will be discussed by Utkarsh Patel, faculty of comparative mythology at Mumbai University, who will discuss lesser known versions of the story,” he informs. The workshop will be a part of the Books On Toast festival that will take place on Saturday.
