In a tribute to the literary legend, Mumbai-based event company Mohor Entertainment will present a version of Rabindranath Tagore’s Mayar Khela in the form of an Opera. This is the first time that the work will be performed in its entirety, without any cuts. The musical extravaganza unfolds with a plot about a confused heart that stumbles on its way to realising its dream.
It showcases the pain of rejection, the anxiety of desire, the joy of acceptance, displaying along the way a brilliant evolution of the characters that transform and often elevate themselves.
Literary and aesthetic beauty are not the only points that will be highlighted in this representation of the drama, which was first staged in 1888. The preparation for the three-and-a-half hour act has taken nearly five years of meticulous effort with the script and music. The performance features multi-layered dance sequences that have incorporated a blend of Indian Classical and Western Contemporary forms.
Interpreted and directed by Sumitro Mukherjee, the act features Bharatanatyam dancers Raul D’Souza, Prachi Save Saathi and Manju, grandson of the late guru Elangbam Anganghal Singh, a doyen of Sankirtana and an expert of Cholom (a Manipuri dance form). The cast also includes eminent dancers from other forms such as Mahathi Vijayprakash, Nilesh Singha and Anusree Bonnerjee.
