This Saturday, if you happen to drop by Andheri gastro-pub The House, you may spot a kinky nurse, a cowboy brandishing a whip or even Princess Leia in a metal bikini. Well, these are guests fulfilling their role-play fantasies at 2x2 Bar Night hosted by Gaysi, an online forum for the desi queer community.

Having organised a Prom Night earlier, the upcoming edition of the bar night invites people to party, donning the garb of any character, role or even accessory of their choice, with an idea to break from self-imposed identity for something more adventurous. "We wanted to go beyond organising a standard party, and there is nothing taboo about enjoying role play. The idea is to create a safe social space for the queer community," says Priya Gangwani, a member of Gaysi, and editor of their annual self-published magazine The Gaysi Zine.
What's in store? The event features a surprise act by a city musician and later, a DJ will spin Contemporary, Rock, Hip-Hop and Pop numbers. However, it will begin with a 30-minute conversation on role play and consent. Gangwani, along with Anushka Jadhav (managing director, No Country For Women, a gender education initiative) and Raj Merchant (author and member of LABIA, a queer feminist LBT collective) will get on bar stools to kick off the informal chat.

"While currently, the code of conduct exists only for heterosexual relationships, we need to develop them for the LGBT community too. For instance, taking a person's consent before making a move on them, learning how to ask them out, etc. The talk is especially for our younger guests, who are just beginning to understand their identity and may feel awkward in a social setting," says Jadhav.

Gangwani adds, "It's not a panel discussion but more of a free-flowing conversation on the importance of consent in a social setting. For instance, how to approach a person you like when you don't know their preference. Essentially, bar night is an opportunity to meet and socialise."
