Every year, usually during the mid-january, Makar Sankranti is celebrated, more particularly in the Indian subcontinent. Makar Sankranti is celebrated as a festival of harvest. It has different names associated with similar festivals in different regions in India; for example – it is known as Maghi in Punjab, Magh in Assam, Pongal in Tamil Nadu, Maghi Sangrand in Jammu, Maghi Saaji in Himachal Pradesh etc.
This year – in 2023 – Makar Sankranti will be celebrated in India on January 14. It follows a solar cycle, and the festival is celebrated “marking the sun`s transit into the Makara Rashi or Capricorn sign”. The festival is celebrated “to honor the god of the sun” – Surya.
