When Rexi James started her TikTok account, she took 21 credits in college while working full-time as a receptionist. She started to become popular on the app, gaining 530k followers in a short time. “I made the account for fun,” James said. “I wasn’t expecting it to blow up or to gain anything from it.” Although the account has since been deleted, many of her followers moved over to her Instagram account. Her followers were constantly telling her that she should become a model and create an OnlyFans account, which allowed her to post explicit pictures. “Even at this point, I still didn’t think that I would make a lot of money. I figured I might make enough to buy gas or groceries.” However, she’s now in the top 0.3% of creators on OnlyFans and makes enough money to pay her way through college to get her degree in communications. She sees it as a dream come true, all because she started a TikTok on a whim.
Rexi James has Arthrogryposis, which causes a limitation of the movement of joints. She never thought she would be successful in modeling industry because of her disability. “You don’t see people with disabilities in the entertainment industry,” she said. “I was taught by the media that I wasn’t attractive enough my whole life. I’ve proved them wrong!” One of James’s favourite parts of her job is talking to other disabled people. They feel inspired by her success, and it’s empowering to see someone who looks like you succeed. “I’m able to be a voice for a minority group and help others gain confidence. I am so grateful for the success I’ve had.”
