Remembered for playing the Western villain in Hindi cinema in the 1970s and '80s, Tom Alter is equally known for his powerful solo performances on stage and command over Urdu. The actor will be performing in the city this weekend in three plays that are part of a festival called Nayaab: Maulana Azad (Urdu), KL Saigal (Hindi) and Lal Qile Ka Aakhri Mushaera (Urdu).

The plays twill be staged by Pierrot's Troupe from Delhi in collaboration with the Yusuf and Farida Hamied Foundation. The play Maulana Azad &mdash; a solo performance by Alter &mdash; has had over 139 shows till date. The play evolves in the backdrop of Maulana Azad dictating notes to Humayun Kabir for his book and features the Maulana discussing an entire gamut of issues, largely apolitical, ranging from white jasmine tea to the Taj Mahal, including entertaining anecdotes and memoirs from his life. His personal relations with Gandhi, Nehru, Patel and Jinnah also come under the scanner in the play.
KL Saigal, a musical play was the first theatrical presentation on the life and times of legendary singer/actor. It highlights key moments of his life including his time in Jammu, being a salesman in Delhi, a struggler in Kolkata and a superstar in Bombay. The play re-lives the music and cinema of yesteryear, and also features live recitals of Saigal's ghazals, dadras, thumris and film songs.
The third play, Lal Qile Ka Aakhri Mushaera is a costume and period drama that re-creates what was supposedly the last poetic congregation during the reign of the Mughal Emperor and eminent poet, Bahadur Shah Zafar, played by Alter. The play presents a the works of Ustaad Zauq, Mirza Ghalib, Momin, Zafar, Dagh, Azurdah, Aish, Sheftah, Balmukund Huzoor, Tishnah, Daagh, Ustaad Shauq, Sakhanand Raqam and other legendary Urdu poets on one stage.
