'People still think that being gay or lesbian is all about sex'

Organisers of the third edition of the Mumbai international queer film festival, Kashish 2012, want you to know that the sexual orientation of the protagonists featured in the 120 films is incidental.u00a0“These films ‘normalise’ the definition of what it means to be lesbian or gay,” says festival co-director Sridhar Rangayan, referring to the line-up that includes films from 30 countries.

Highlights include an India Focus that will feature four films on queer issues in regional languages, including Marathi and Punjabi, while Q-Toons is a special package of gay animation films.u00a0US filmmaker Rob Williams, who has in the past directed popular gay romantic comedies, will also attend the festival to present his films.u00a0

Apart from film screenings, there will be panel discussions, interactive sessions with the cast and crew of select films, and an art corner that will ‘celebrate the lost art of Bollywood billboards with a queer twist’. “Most of the films being screened cannot be downloaded and might never be seen again in the country,” says Sridhar.

Jury members comprise actors Renuka Shahane, Parvin Dabas, Mahabanoo Mody-Kotwal, Mona Ambegaonkar and film critic Mayank Shekhar, who will judge films under the competition section.
