Gear up for the annual Vasantotsav music festival. This year's line-up will include Folk Fusion, Bhajans, Classical music and Kabir dohas

A musical ode

The annual music festival Vasantotsav, organised by Dr Vasantrao Deshpande Pratishthan, will offer a a variety of music to its patrons and has been witnessing a steady rise in audiences year on year.

Rahul Deshpande, organiser of Vasantotsav, said, “Over the last few years, we have introduced a Vasantotsav Youth Award for young talent in Classical music and we are happy to announce that this year, Mandar Gadgil, disciple of Pandit Vijay Koparkar has been chosen for this award,”u00a0he said.

Vasantotsav 2013 will commence on January 18 with a Sarod performance by Amaan and Ayaan Ali Khan, sons of Ustaad Amjad Ali Khan.u00a0It will be followed by a unique Folk Fusion performance by three artists from different genres of music including music composer Shantanu Moitra, lyricist Swanand Kirkire and vocalist Kaushiki Chakrabarty.



Anand Bhate

The second day will feature a solo performance by Tabla player Yogesh Samsi, who is a disciple of Ustad Alla Rakha. The concluding session will feature artistes Rahul Deshpande, Anand Bhate and Jayateerth Mevundi together on one platform performing Bhajans and Natyasangeet.

The last day will see Mukhtiyar Ali and Kaluram Bamaniya perform Kabir Wani. Ali represents the 26th generation of a humble community which has successfully kept alive the oral tradition of Sufiana Qalam.


Kaushiki Chakravarty

Kaluram Bamaniya is another folk singer from the Malwa region of Madhya Pradesh, who sings the poetry of Saint Kabir. Vasantotsav 2012 will conclude with a solo performance
of Rahul Deshpande.
