A still from the play Tale of the Taj
Today is the time you'll get to know about the facts of old times which you were till today unaware of with the help of the play Tale of the Taj presented by Pierrot's Troupe. The play shows Shah Jahan and Mumtaz Mahal in a new light. "We've explored Mumtaz's character. She has been a part of literature but not history. She's just remembered as Shah Jahan's beloved. But there's more to her character which we've explored through the play. If there has to be a protagonist in the play then it's her," says Dr M. Sayeed Alam, one of the directors.
Telling more about Mumtaz's character, Ashok Purang, another director states, "The character has some grey shades but she's a very smart, ambitious and cunning woman who understands politics. She was the woman behind Shah Jahan's victories as she was the one who taught him politics and prepared him for everything."
The play also focuses on the reason behind the building of the Taj Mahal.
"It was Shah Jahan's grief and guilt that made him create the beautiful monument. After Mumtaz's death he saw a cloud and within that an image of Taj Mahal. So, he converted his imagination into reality by building the monument as he wanted his dear wife to come to earth and rest in the most beautiful place." So, go out today as you get to view history in a different light.
