Vegetarian dessert and savoury lovers can rejoice. Mulund's newly opened Patisserie Uno delivers on most counts, thanks to its wide variety of delights, of the egg-less kinds

When we walked into Patisserie Uno, the symmetry of the food in its glass displays was near perfect. The yellow-lit interiors made the savouries and baked goodies appear quite enticing and pepped up the mood, instantly. As we took a quick scan ofu00a0 Mulund's newest bakery, a member from the counter staff came over to our side, to make things easier. In fact, what we liked is that they went out of their way to help us with suggestions about the chilli quotient and the bitterness of the chocolate, as per our preferences.

All American Cheesecake

The menu was impressively vast, particularly since it's an all-veggie place. We ordered the Onion and Mushroom Roll (Rs 25), Pesto Roll (Rs 25) and BBQ Puff (Rs 22). We decided to experiment when it came to dessert ufffd the much-favoured Chocolate Fantasy was bypassed for the Chocolate Cappuccino Pastry (Rs 65) and an All American Cheese Cake (Rs 90), the most expensive pastry on their menu). Clearly, Patisserie Uno prefers to take the midle path with its price range

The BBQ Puff was perfectly crisp from the outside and not too oily while the spices within did justice to the filling. Just when we were warming up to the place, the Pesto Roll made us do a rethink. Our in-house Pesto fans doled out their verdict ufffd the pesto could hardly be tasted and the quantity of the filling was fit for a pauper. But the last snack on our list, Onion and Mushroom Roll changed our mood. The bread (crescent moon-shaped and pretty appealing) was soft and the filling did not loose the mild flavour of the mushrooms despite being a tad spicy.

Next, it was our turn to sample the pastries. Both our choices left us with mixed feelings. The chocolate in the Chocolate Cappuccino Pastry was of the melt-in-mouth variety but the heady cappuccino flavouring was amiss.
What might have been an interesting combination of coffee and chocolate in a deliciously fresh and soft pastry turned out to be a choco-cream fare. The All American Cheesecake was the biggest disappointment. The texture of the pastry was not at all like how a cheesecake should be and the taste left much to be desired. They also offer other desserts including cup cakes (Rs 28), tarts (Rs 20-30), Chocolate and Tiramisu Mousse (Rs 35 and 45), Croissants (Rs. 20-25) and pizzas, burgers and sandwiches. Also on the menu are different varieties of khari and toast.

Since Patisserie Uno is situated pretty close to outlets belonging to two popular bakery chains, we couldn't help but wonder what the business logic was in setting up shop. Later, when we spoke with co-founder Girish Vira, he spelt it out, "The biggest difference is that we have a lot of variety despite being 100 per cent vegetarian; no eggs are used at all. We also offer personalised cakes where photographs on them are hand-painted unlike the computerised options that are typically available elsewhere."
