The Mercedes-Benz E-Class Coupe makes its public debut at the Detroit Motor Show next year!

All-new Mercedes-Benz E-Class Coupe revealed

The all-new Mercedes-Benz E-Class made its debut back in January. Now, just under a year since the sedan was unveiled, the E-Class coupe has been revealed. The two-door coupe seats four and features a design that’s, of course, similar to the C-Class and S-Class coupes.

The E-Class is the fourth body style that the model will be offered in after the sedan, estate and all-terrain (crossover wagon). Design highlights include a low-slung sports grille with a large three-pointed star in the middle, a long bonnet with muscular contours, door-mounted wing mirrors and a swooping roofline that culminates at the stubby rear.

The coupe is 123mm longer, 74mm wider and 32mm taller than its predecessor, while the wheelbase is up by 113mm too. This has translated into increased cabin space, with Mercedes claiming incremental improvements in headroom, shoulder room and legroom as well.

The car features LED multi-beam headlamps and LED taillights, with the latter getting a gimmicky welcome feature. When the vehicle is opened, the taillight LEDs illuminate from the centre of the vehicle towards the outer edges and, once locked, the light sequence runs in the opposite direction.

The cabin is carried over from the sedan; so you get a wide dashboard, featuring four central turbine-styled AC vents and two at the sides, and a widescreen cockpit consisting of the instrument cluster and infotainment displays housed under one lens. The steering wheel features touch controls, while there’s a touchpad in the centre console as well, which gets handwriting recognition.

At launch, the car will be available with one diesel and three petrol engine options, all of which come paired with the 9G-Tronic nine-speed automatic transmission:

  • 220 d: 2.0-litre, in-line four-cylinder diesel engine that makes 194PS of power and 400Nm of torque. 0-100kmph comes up in a claimed 7.4 seconds, with the top speed rated at 242kmph.

  • 200: 2.0-litre, in-line four-cylinder petrol engine that makes 184PS of power and 300Nm of torque. 0-100kmph comes up in a claimed 7.8 seconds, with the top speed rated at 240kmph.

  • 300: 2.0-litre, in-line four-cylinder petrol engine that makes 245PS of power and 370Nm of torque. It has a claimed 0-100kmph time of 6.4 seconds and an electronically limited top speed of 250kmph.

  • 400 4MATIC: 3.0-litre, V6 petrol motor that produces 333PS and 480Nm. 0-100kmph comes up in a claimed 5.3 seconds, with the top speed limited to 250kmph.

Like the sedan, the E Coupe will make its public debut at the Detroit Motor Show, with sales beginning in mid-2017. Since the E-Class sedan will be launched in India in the first half of next year, expect the coupe’s Indian debut towards the end of 2017 or early 2018.
