Many moons ago during a music festival, this reporter was enjoying a pint of beer with a rock musician before she went onstage. "Guess still a lot of guitar strings to break before they pronounce me as rockstar instead of a female rockstar," she muttered responding to the announcement as she took a last swig and disappeared.
The DJ-ing scene in the Capital wasn't different either. Clubs, private party organisers and merrymakers have enjoyed the glam factor that a lady behind the console lends but taking their music seriously, well, that didn't quite arise. But today, the Capital can boast of a few names who stay more busy then their male
counterparts traveling all over the globe. And even performing in remote corners of the country where DJ-ing was a trade taken up by the wedding tentwala's younger cousin. Women in Music@ The First All Female DJ Festival, starting today, takes the experience a notch higher.

Fall of the fort
The four-day festival will feature more than 12 DJs from all around the globe who will perform at eight different
venues. Some of the names include the city's own like DJ Barkha who came into the scene a few years back after dabbling with modeling. The lady is giving some of our old club residents a run for their money.
Adding flavour to this spicy potpourri are others like DJ Olivia Zabella. The Melbourne House scene influenced the lady who 'flexes her muscles' in Bristol (among the men and recording company bigwigs) and is believed to be shaping the music, thanks to the new army of youngsters she is creating through her workshop sessions.
If you thought minimal techno or dirty house was male forte, think again, that bastion has fallen, thanks to Amazons like Olivia. There is also DJ Carlotta Lackman, who is the first female DJ from East India and has played in top nightclubs of Calcutta. For the spunky girl, 'DJ-ing means everything'. She has been performing for five years now. Her music cuts across genres and she spins everything fromu00a0 retro, Hip Hop, Bollywood, House, EDM and Psychedelic trance.
Come as you are
Female DJs are rarely known to be vocal about talking about their 'competing with the men' crusade. Of course, when you peep into their lives through interviews, documentary films and articles, they show the grit, conviction and courage they have to survive in this dominated world. Otherwise, they go on with their work quietly like any expert who has a job to do. So gents, ladies and friends, feast on their music for the next four days. But remember not to let it snowball into a 'bra burning' debate after a few pegs down. Simply listen to them for their music and trust me ufffd they are damn good at it.
